Died: 1529
BARTOLOMMEO
BUON [sometimes, Bon] trained as a stonemason with his father. The famous
Ca' d'Oro was one of the projects on which they worked together. While
a great deal of Buon's career was devoted to executing the works of others,
as in repairing the Campanile of San Marco and rebuilding the Procuratie
Vecchie, he was also an important Venetian innovator in the Renaissance
style, as shown by the portion of Ca' del Duca
that was completed to his design.
The Scuola
di San Rocco stands as his major work, although the building includes
ideas of his successors as well. The portal of SS. Giovanni e Paolo
also shows his introduction of classical elements into a Gothic
work. He was responsible for the portal of Madonna dell'Orto as
well. Buon ended his career as proto to the Procurators of
San Marco, the most important architectural post of Venice.
