Sen. Alvise Cornaro
(G-20)
Born: 4 October 1588
Died: 19
May 1641
SEN. ALVISE CORNARO, a member of the Cornaro della Regina
branch of the family in its S. Polo line, was the son of Doge
Giovanni Cornaro (G-12). He held important (and costly) posts abroad
on behalf of the Republic, including the post of Ambassador to Spain,
1619. He is primarily remembered, however, for his efforts to discourage
his father from accepting the post of Doge in 1624 because -- since the
award of offices to the children of Doges was prohibited -- his own budding
diplomatic career would be interrupted.
